The Amazon Voyage was recognized in National Geographic Adventure Magazine as one of the "25 Greatest Adventures in the World."

Day 1 • Saturday Miami / Lima This evening, fly nonstop on American Airlines to Lima, Peru — the nation’s capital and largest city. On arrival meet your IE expedition leader and transfer to your fine hotel for the night. (Meals Aloft)

Day 2 • Sunday Lima / Iquitos / Amazon River After breakfast, we fly over the Andes Mountains to Iquitos. On arrival, we board our riverboat, home for the coming week. Tonight, we cruise slowly up the Amazon, looking at the stars of the northern and southern constellations. (B,L,D)

Day 3 • Monday Amazon River / Río Ucayali We awake this morning on the Amazon, seeing some of the ever-changing panorama of jungle life as the boat continues upriver. Small villages dot the shoreline, and channels weaving through island mazes provide close-up views of a variety of marsh birds such as oriole blackbirds, purple gallinules and yellow-headed caracaras. This morning we arrive at the junction of the Río Marañón and Río Ucayali, inception of the Amazon River. We turn up the left fork, the Ucayali. We’re apt to see both gray and pink dolphins cavorting near the boat and along the shore- line. We take an excursion into the surrounding rainforest in search of giant water lilies and elusive wildlife, such as monkeys and sloths. This afternoon we visit a small river village or perhaps call on a local shaman. As dusk approaches, fishing bats begin their night’s foraging. (B,L,D)

Day 4 • Tuesday Río Ucayali / Requena This morning we explore a small tributary of the Ucayali. Our guides help us search for animals including primates, sloths and an incredible variety of birds. Our ship continues up the river to the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. This afternoon, an excursion into this largest wetland reserve in the world provides the opportunity to see primates including monk sakis, red howler and squirrel monkeys. We enjoy a nocturnal visit to the reserve for a chance to view caimans, capybaras, common potoos, frogs and other wildlife. (B,L,D)

Day 5 • Wednesday Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve After breakfast, we board excursion boats and spend the day exploring this flooded realm, seeing wading birds such as white-necked and black-capped herons, wattled jacanas and sunbitterns. Parrots are common, including the most conspicuous member of this family, the endangered scarlet macaw. We listen for leaves rustling high in the trees, then are rewarded with the sight of monkeys foraging for food. We recently discovered an area with a family of giant river otters, and we’ll look for these endearing, impressive creatures, as well as the rare harpy eagle. Mid-morning we stop to take a leisurely hike through a varzea (seasonally flooded forest), where we’ll likely see three-toed sloths and a proliferation of butterflies including spectacular brilliant blue morphos. We return to the vessel to see even more wildlife as we explore the river channels. (B,L,D)

Day 6 • Thursday Río Tapiche / Río Marañón This morning our ship enters the Río Tapiche. Today’s activities include paddling a dugout canoe and visiting a river village. The villagers here have small handmade crafts that you may wish to purchase. After a full morning, we return to our ship and continue down the Ucayali toward the Río Marañón. (B,L,D)

Day 7 • Friday Río Marañón / San Regis We enter the “Terra Firma” to see the large trees festooned with epiphytes, palms, woody vines and a vaulted canopy. The trail winds through the forest, arriving at a suspended walkway that allows you to explore the world above the forest floor. This afternoon, an excursion on a blackwater river provides another chance to enjoy the beauty of the tropical rainforest. (B,L,D)

Day 8 • Saturday Iquitos / Lima After breakfast, we tour Iquitos, then transfer to the airport for our flight to Lima. You may take an optional tour of this great city, where the Cathedral and Plaza Mayor are among the highlights. Later we enjoy a farewell dinner at our hotel and then transfer to the airport for our flight back to Miami. (B,L,D)

Day 9 • Sunday Miami This morning we arrive in Miami and connect with flights home. (Meals Aloft)
