Ancestral locations

The Murgas ancestors originate in North Slovakia, region Kysuce (former Trencsén Megye). All the locations are shown on the 1910 administrative map

Krásno nad Kysucou

Before 1918 the official name was Karásznó. The total population in 1910 was 2,456 with a ethnic breakdown of 19 Magyars and 2,407 Slovaks.  The religious breakdown included mostly Roman Catholics. The parish office in Krásno nad Kysucou administered also the church in Zborov nad Bystricou, thus the records were kept there.

Zborov nad Bystricou

Before 1918 the official name was Felsozboró, or only Zboró. The total population in 1910 was 1,607 which included mostly Roman Catholic Slovaks.

The region was devastated by the attacks of Tartars in 13th century and didn't recover until the 15th century.  The first settlers came here after 1400AD (this is the founding year of the neighbor town Stara Bystrica). Zborov nad Bystricou were founded by the Valach colonists in 15th century. Valachs were shepherds growing special sheep able to live in high mountains meadows. The animals and the technology was brought to Upper Hungary (Felvidek) by people from east Carpathian - ethnic Ruthenians and Romanians. They settled first in the Orava (Arva) and Liptov (Lipto) county, where also the local population acquired this technology. Later they expand  to other regions. The first written reference to Zborov nad Bystricou is from 1662.

The region was populated along the river Bystrica in form of isolate farmsteads. The farmsteads are named by the founder families. The first farmsteads were Pitkovci, Fojtovci, Kocifajovci. The first settlers lived in simple cottages without chimney built together. They were shepards and farmers who worked out in the forests. The first artissans were smiths and carpenters. The clothing and shoes were done at home. The first mills were funded about 1640AD (Fojtovci, Droscakovci, Kocifajovci).

On threshold of 19th/20th century, the majority of the population were farmers, they grew cattlestock and sheep. Many of them used the very long winters to do handicrafts (baskets, weaving). The people lived in poverty and many of them were saison laborer in  Ostrava (now Czech Republic) coal and steel mills. Many of them emigrated to USA.

In present the total population is  2,136. There are 1,020 inhabitants in productive age, from which there are 752 commuters.  According the Homeland dictionary of Slovak settlements, in 1977 the following farmstead names were in use:
Backovci, Fojtovci, Gerovci, Gorilovci, Kovacovci, Hazovci, Janosikovci, Kocifajovci, Komanovci, Murgasovci, Micovci, Mydlovci, Orieskovci, Pitkovci, Podolakovci, Polackovci, Smolkovci, Scibalovci, Slapkovci, Valkovci a Zuscakovci. Only the farmstead Hazovci is disclosed on the present hiking map of the region, unfortunately the Murgas homestead is not there.

The first town signum appears on a document date April 9, 1785. This motive was adopted as the official coat of arm of Zborov nad Bystricou.
